Redwood

About

Redwood is the original farm bungalow built in 1910, refurbished as a three bedroom bed and breakfast accommodation set in your own private garden for your exclusive use.

The house is set on a 1.7 hectare farmlet surrounded on three sides by a working dairy farm.

The dwelling was always a simple farmhouse and features a mix of window, ceiling, and flooring styles as it has evolved over time. The third bedroom was a tack room, hence the door to the exterior. The sunroom was enclosed circa the 1950s and is now the breakfast room.

From cows to country garden
The property was once part of a dairy farm. Over the past few years, we have transitioned the land from dairy to a wilderness garden with the goal being a woodland garden with large farm trees and rambling undergrowth.

Fruit trees are also dotted around. Already, there is an increase in birds, grass variety, insects and nesting birds.

Decks and outdoor living
Kiwis love their indoor/outdoor living all year round. Redwood has a back deck with table and chairs, a paved courtyard and another deck with table and chairs from the breakfast room/sun room as well as large lawns to sit on.

Traditionally in New Zealand, especially in the country, the back door is where visitors arrive and were welcomed into the farmhouse kitchen where often a soup would be on the coal range, or scones whipped up with fresh farm cream and homemade jam.

From the moment you step inside Redwood you feel the stress drain from you. The welcoming warm golden floor of the back entrance is reflected in areas around the bungalow including the breakfast room, kitchen and laundry.

A feature in the entry space is the antique pedal Singer sewing machine, which almost every New Zealand household had to make their own clothes. Above the sewing machine is a shelf with a basketful of hand knitted woollen slippers for you to wear during your stay.
